APIA Leadership Development Program for Higher Education 2012

For the past 16 years, LEAP (Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics), together with APAHE (Asian and Pacific Americans in Higher Education) have been conducting an extensive leadership development program for Asian and Pacific Islander Americans within higher education. We are encouraging you to review the online brochure about the Leadership Development Program in Higher Education (LDPHE) and to consider joining us this year or referring/nominating others to the program. The link to download the program brochure is http://leap.org/docs/2012LDPHEBrochure_v2.pdf .

Although there were some minor gains in representation, APAs still continue to represent less than one percent of all college chancellors and presidents in the United States. We find this unconscionable and even reprehensible. In addition to institutional barriers, our people also face the lack of a support system that enables us to have the preparation to move into leadership positions on our college campuses. The LDPHE program has been highly successful in developing the leadership potential of APAs. Many graduates of the program have moved into administrative positions, including college presidencies, vice presidencies, deanships, directorships, and department chairs. Some graduates have pursued and received graduate degrees. All of this is instrumental in building and strengthening the leadership pipeline in order to ensure that Asian Pacific American issues and concerns are understood and addressed.

This year’s LDPHE will be held from Wednesday, July 11 through Saturday, July 14. This intensive, four-day session is jam packed with APA speakers and presenters who are noted in their particular fields and within higher education leadership circles. Each participant has direct access to APA mentors who meet throughout the program and afterwards with participants in order to support their further development.

We encourage you to either consider attending this year’s program or in supporting another APA to attend the program.

Thank you so much for your consideration!

Sincerely,

Audrey Yamagata-Noji Henry Gee
