Regents Approve new name for Ethnic Cultural Center

January 12, 2012
by

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that today the UW Board of Regents unanimously approved naming the new Ethnic Cultural Center (ECC) as the “Samuel E. Kelly Ethnic Cultural Center” in honor of the founding vice president of Minority Affairs. Members of the Kelly family were present at the meeting and were acknowledged by the Regents with a round of applause.

Thanks to each of you for your support in this effort. I cannot think of a more appropriate way to recognize Dr. Kelly and to ensure that his contributions live on through generations to come. To my knowledge, this is the first and only UW campus building to be named for a person of color.

A press release has been issued and this historic event is featured on our web sites. A reception and tour of the new facility are being planned for the grand re-opening in fall 2012.
